Biography

Xosé Anxelu G. Morán is a Research Professor at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO). He joined the Oceanographic Center of Gijón/Xixón in 2001, shortly after completing his Ph.D. work at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona and receiving his degree in Biology from the University of Oviedo/Uviéu. From 2014 to 2020, he was an Associate Professor of Marine Science at the Red Sea Research Center of KAUST, where he holds an adjunct professorship. As a biological oceanographer and microbial ecologist, he has focused on the role of microbial plankton in biogeochemical carbon cycling. His research interests include the trophic interactions between phytoplankton and heterotrophic prokaryotes, the dynamics of planktonic microbes, and their response to global change, particularly warming, within the framework of the metabolic theory of ecology. Prof. Morán combines experimental approaches with large-scale observations, both spatial and temporal, in order to predict the future directions and extent of change in the structure and function of marine microbial food webs.
